Even though she missed out on the All Stars 3 crown last week, Shangela’s career is doing just fine, she’ll soon be on the big screen with Lady Gaga.
The RuPaul’s Drag Race queen has dropped some hints about her role in the upcoming film A Star is Born.
Starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, the film is a remake of the 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March.
The movie about a film star who helps an aspiring actress was remade a further two times. Once in 1954 starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and then again in 1976 starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
Shangela wouldn’t give too much away about her ‘not giant’ role but said she loved working with Lady Gaga.
‘I’m in drag, I’m kind of Lady Gaga’s drag mother, a bar owner,’ Shangela told Billboard.
‘I can’t give much more away than that. But it’s gonna be really fun, it’s not a giant role but it’s a good role that’s memorable.’
It’s not the first time Lady Gaga has rubbed shoulders with a cast member of Drag Race. She appeared as a guest judge in the first episode of season nine and gave the queens notes to help them develop their drag.
Shangela had nothing but praise for Lady Gaga saying working with her was a ‘dream come true’.
‘When you look up to someone, idolize them, and their journey and experience and how they work, and then you get to work with them and see they’re everything you dreamed,’ Shangela said.
‘And she was everything I had ever dreamed she would be. Professional, kind, funny.’
The Texas-born queen will also star in the sequel to Drag Race winner, Bianca Del Rio’s film, Hurricane Bianca.
Streisand approves
Fellow gay icon, Barbra Streisand has seen parts of Gaga’s performance in the new A Star is Born and has give her approval.
‘Oh, I can’t say too much,’ Streisand told TV producer Ryan Murphy in a Q&A at PaleyFest last week.
‘I haven’t seen too much, but it’s good. It’s very, very good.’
A Star is Born will hit cinemas on 5 October this year.

I don’t have a gay bone in my body: Kendall Jenner addresses sexuality
In a recent interview with Vogue, Kendall Jenner addressed the rumors of her sexuality.
Apparently, the internet was convinced the Kardashian-Jenner clan member was gay.
Why? Well, Jenner has some ideas about that.
‘I think it’s because I’m not like all my other sisters, who are like, “Here’s me and my boyfriend!” So it was a thing for a minute because no one ever saw me with a guy,’ she explained. ‘I would always go that extra mile to be low-key with guys, sneaking around all the time. You don’t want to, like, look crazy.’
She’s fairly certain where she stands, though.
Continuing her thoughts: ‘I don’t think I have a bisexual or gay bone in my body, but I don’t know! Who knows?! I’m all down for experience—not against it whatsoever—but I’ve never been there before.’
Then, however, she concludes: ‘I’m not gay. I have literally nothing to hide. I would never hide something like that.’
So brave
Twitter quickly leapt on Jenner — and for ‘coming out’ as straight.

Incisive, witty humour came out in full.
Kendall Jenner came out as straight. I just really wish these people would keep their private lives private. Children idolize her. Now they’re goin to get the idea that being straight is okay, normal even.
— Leanna Renee (@leannuh_renay) March 14, 2018
in 10 years people are going to ask you where you were and what you were doing when kendall jenner came out as straight and i think that’s really beautiful
— jake (@HUNTYCHAN) March 14, 2018
This is so difficult for me to confess… I’ve never told this to anyone ever, not even family… but I feel like it’s finally time. So here it goes:
I’m a straight woman
Thanks Kendall Jenner for being a voice for all of us and for inspiring us to be our true selves pic.twitter.com/LHha4Ji9XB

There’s also plenty of confusion.
i’m so confused by this entire paragraph of kendall jenner insisting that she’s not gay but she’s up for any experience but she’s not gay guys pic.twitter.com/MBqa7d8huO

Others aren’t convinced someone in the family isn’t gay….
Listen I don’t care if Kendall Jenner said she’s not gay in her Vogue interview, Kris Jenner has six children you cannot convince me that they’re all straight

Tom and Abby from Queer Eye just got engaged and love is not dead
The loveable bear, Tom Jackson, from the first episode of the rebooted Queer Eye has had an emotional rollercoaster of a love life, especially since the show went to air.
One of his main motivations to get a Queer Eye makeover was to woo back his third ex-wife Abby.
Things seemed to go pretty well in the episode called ‘You Can’t Fix Ugly’, when Abby turned up to support him at a car show and seemed to enjoy Tom’s cooking efforts.
But last month, Tom announced on Twitter that the pair had split up in September last year and proceeded to post multiple, heartbreaking photos of the pair.
I just watched my episode for about the 20th time. I cry
like a baby
ever time I watch it. Just to let the world
know, Abby and I are no longer together. She will always be the love
of my life. I will always love
her more than anything!!!!!!!
— Tom Jackson (@TomJack20176306) February 28, 2018
Just a week later though, Tom lifted all our spirits when he announced that he was back together with Abby.
We were all happy for the pair and it rekindled our belief that love was not cancelled.
We hear wedding bells
And in even greater news, Tom has just announced the pair is officially engaged.
‘It’s official, Abby and I are engaged. What a Netflix special the would be. If the Fab 5 planned and attended our wedding!!!!!!!!!,’ Tom wrote on Twitter less than two hours ago.

— Tom Jackson (@TomJack20176306) March 13, 2018
He also posted a photo of the pair together with Abby wearing a gorgeous engagement ring. It is not known whether it is the same engagement ring from when they first got married in the mid-90s.
Let’s hope he doesn’t serve redneck margaritas at the wedding, but this is definitely one Netflix special we would watch.

Bisexual boxer Nicola Adams turned into Barbie doll
Bisexual boxer Nicola Adams has inspired a Barbie doll, released for International Women’s Day.
The two-times Olympic gold medal winner is the first UK and bisexual star to be a ‘Shero’.
Mattel says they chose Nicola to honor her and inspire other women.
Nicola Adams is first ‘bisexual’ Barbie
‘I am so excited and honored to be… first ever boxer Barbie,’ Nicola said.
The Nicola Adams doll has boxing gloves, gear embroidered with her ‘Lioness’ nickname, and her cropped hairstyle’.
‘My hope is that everything I do helps more people realise they can do anything they put their mind to,’ Nicola added.
‘Without my own role models, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
‘Growing up, my biggest role models were my mum and Muhammad Ali – there were no female boxers in media when I was a kid, and I might have discovered my passion sooner if I’d seen other women boxing.
‘That’s why empowering the next generation of kids is something I’m passionate about. It’s great to work with Barbie to share my story now.’
Other Barbie ‘Sheroes’
Mattel has chosen 14 other women from across the world to be a Barbie ‘Shero’.
Others being honored this year include director Patty Jenkins, gold medalist Chloe Kim,and conservationist Bindi Irwin.

Peppermint finally speaks out on RuPaul’s controversial trans comments.
The first openly trans woman on RuPaul’s Drag Race has broken her silence on RuPaul’s comments about trans queens..
Peppermint penned an op-ed in Billboard saying she disagreed with RuPaul’s comments.
‘Doing Drag Race was one of the best moments of my life. RuPaul kicked open so many doors for queer and gender non-conforming folks and is an absolute trailblazer in the world of drag,’ Peppermint wrote.
‘But recently, Ru made statements I disagree with.’
Earlier this week drag legend, RuPaul, created a wave of controversy after telling The Guardian that contestants who had undergone gender confirming surgery would not be allowed on his VH1 reality show.
The backlash to his comments was swift and he issued a statement a few hours later on Twitter, but stopped short of apologizing. He also incorrectly used a flag for trains rather than the trans pride flag in one of his tweets.
No one defines your womanhood
Peppermint said she has learned a lot since she started transitioning in 2012.
One of the most important lessons was that no one has the ability to define your gender identity or ‘transness’.
‘I also learned women should not be defined by what surgeries they have or haven’t had,’ she wrote.
‘The most important takeaway is that ones transition, the beginning, the middle, and end, is entirely personal and cannot be categorized or measured in the context of being blessed by someone else’s validation or approval.’
Peppermint did agree with RuPaul about one thing, that ‘drag is a big F-You to male dominated culture’.
‘Trans women and women, have always been directly and indirectly contributing to the art form of drag,’ Peppermint wrote.
‘My hope is that together, we can uplift all forms of drag, both on TV, and in the real world.
‘Gay men do not own the idea of gender performance.
‘Unfortunately it won’t be the first or last time we will hear a woman can’t do something a man can. I’m out to change that.’

How Ruth Coker-Burks became the angel of America’s AIDS crisis
The first time Ruth Coker-Burks saw an AIDS patient, he was near death.
Frail, sunken skin resting on hollow bones, the spark of life dwindling: his name was Jimmy.
All he wanted, in the world, was to speak to his mother. But she wouldn’t come.
Ruth Coker-Burks – the ‘cemetery angel’
Ruth was a 25-year-old young mother visiting University Hospital in Little Rock to help care for a friend with cancer. This was in 1984.
One day, she noticed a door telling her it was a quarantined room. She saw nurses would draw straws to check on the 100-pound man crying out inside.
She knew what it was, she had read about it. It was then known as GRID – gay-related immune deficiency.
A gay cousin in Hawaii had told her it was just the leather guys in San Francisco, but this was in Arkansas.
Ruth disregarded the warnings on the room, and said hello to the man dying on the hospital bed.
Meeting the first AIDS patient and his mother
‘I only knew him for about 13 or 14 hours,’ she tells Gay Star News.
‘When I met him, he was obviously near death. I went out to call his mother because that’s all in the world he wanted.
‘She wouldn’t come. She wouldn’t even talk to me.
‘I called her and said her son was very near death and wanted to see her before he died.
‘She said, “My son died years ago. I don’t know what you’ve got at the hospital but that’s not my son. Don’t call me back.”
‘So I called her back and said if she hung up on me again I told her I’d put her son’s obituary in the hometown newspaper and I’d list his cause of death.
‘I had her complete attention at that point.’
Pioneer in HIV and AIDS activism
From there, Ruth was a pioneer. Without any medical training, Ruth cared for dying gay and bi men abandoned by families.
She arranged appointments, picked up medication, and counseled them through their grief.
Often she would test friends herself and tell them the results. If they were positive, it was still considered a death sentence.
The AIDS advocate buried over three dozen of these men with her own two hands in the family’s private cemetery.
As an only child, she knew the grounds would never fill its 262 spaces. Across that decade, many of those spaces were used.
‘I did want to give him a proper burial because everyone deserves that,’ she says.
‘Everyone has the dignity of having their own space, saying, “look I was here too”.’
‘If you call this number she will help you…’
More patients kept coming. The hospital told these patients, ‘we don’t deal with you but if you call this number she will help you’.
Ruth dealt with hundreds of men.
‘They all stood out for me. They all did in their own ways,’ she says. ‘Some I don’t remember their names, but I remember their sweet faces.’
Church refused to help Ruth Coker-Burks
Ruth was very religious, but the Methodist church turned its back on her. They would throw away pens she touched and refuse to drink coffee she made.
‘They were horrible. It’s why I’m not religious anymore,’ she says.
‘There wasn’t a church that wanted me because I worked with AIDS patients. They didn’t want me.
‘I thought I was doing what God asked us to do, feed the hungry and take care of the sick and the poor.’
But Ruth doesn’t believe they were frightened of catching the disease, they just hated LGBTI people.
When the church failed her, she found a different kind of divine being to support her.
Getting help from drag queens
‘The first time I saw a drag queen, I thought I was in heaven,’ she says.
‘I thought, “this is the most fascinating thing I have ever seen in my life”. They’re so talented.’
Gay bars got organized and raised funds to support Ruth’s work. Many of the queens that first supported her later came to Ruth as patients.
One of these men was named Billy. He was in his early 20s, a drag queen.
His mother once called Ruth, demanding to know when he was going to die.
‘He’s holding up our lives,’ she said. ‘We don’t want people up here to know [he has AIDS]’.
By the time Billy died, he weighed just 55 pounds.
‘It’s a shame we let so many wonderful magnificent people die’
‘It’s a shame we let so many wonderful magnificent people die,’ she said.
‘Everyone that died of AIDS – so many of them were so talented. The world never got to witness to see how talented they really are.’
When the Center of Disease Control and the National Institute of Health finally decided to do something about HIV and AIDS, they sent people to Ruth as her patients were lasting two years longer than the national average.
‘The only thing they could figure out was that I loved them,’ she said.
‘The human touch was all it took to get them to live.’
In 2014, the Journal of American Medical Association, finally agreed with her.
Ronald Reagan ‘is to blame’ for AIDS crisis
This isn’t just about an sympathetic woman taking care of dying gay men when no one else would. This is about who is to blame.
‘We wouldn’t even have AIDS if it hadn’t been for Ronald Reagan,’ she said.
‘How could the President of the United States not know his constituents are dying of this horrible disease?
‘No one is his entire cabinet. They don’t even mention the word AIDS until years in his term?
‘And then they’re joking about it.’
And it’s true, you can you can still watch video of Reagan’s press secretary and chief of staff laughing about AIDS patients.
Ruth believes if they had treated the disease the same way they did tuberculosis, or the way the US government tackled ebola recently, thousands of lives could have been saved.
Is the US on the brink of another AIDS pandemic?
‘I am afraid that right now we’re at the beginning of an another AIDS pandemic in the United States,’ she said.
‘The way things are going, especially as they’re cutting out medication for HIV.
‘Vice President Pence, he’s from Indiana, and that state has the highest rate of HIV transmissions.’
This is why Ruth is campaigning for sex education in schools.
‘You’ve got a computer and you’ve got that little computer in your hand. You can learn yourself how to put a condom on, how to protect yourself,’ she says in a message to readers.
Importance of sex education
‘Keep your body healthy because it is yours and yours alone. Do the best you can and don’t get caught up in the heat of the moment.’
Ruth now lives a quiet life in Arkansas. She’s a grandmother and is often invited to give speeches at HIV awareness events.
In 2010, she had a stroke. A casual observer would assume she’s fully recovered although she tells us she still has some small issues.
It was thanks to her friends that she got through it.
Remembering them, she said: ‘They all had a unique story that would make any life better.
‘They were so kind and loving and gentle people that the world doesn’t have enough of.
‘We have to take care of people.’

Gay dating app that makes users appear ‘more manly’ come under fire
A gay dating app has been criticised for allowing its users to ‘photoshop’ their bodies to appear ‘more manly’.
The app, ironically called Manly, offers users the option to exaggerate body tone and add facial hair, among other things.
Available for £4.99, the app is accused of reinforcing damaging and ‘unrealistic’ body image stereotypes in men.
This is exactly the kind of social media app that gives anxiety to normal-looking girls and robs them their confidence . Screw the perfect body image! Why can’t one be as one is?
— TheEBG (@The_EBG) February 13, 2018
Manly is also criticised for its ‘upsetting’ social media content that shows edited versions of people after using the app.
Hi, there is our Android version, welcome to download! Android: https://t.co/A9NFR1IkLM…
IOS: https://t.co/5GTk2WHnHK pic.twitter.com/2B5Tg6GTHp— ManlyApp (@ManlyApp) January 4, 2018
Body confidence issues affect men as well as women
The news comes at a time when society celebrates body confidence in people of all shapes and sizes.
Denis Hatton, co-founder of the Be Real Campaign, told the Independent the app’s functions may have a negative affect.
‘A lot of people think body image struggles only affect women, but we’ve seen an increasing number of men desperately trying to live up to the male beauty ideal.
‘Just when we finally started to see progress with brands becoming more responsible and reducing excessive airbrushing, then along comes an app like Manly.
‘This app and others like it are a massive step backwards in creating a society less focussed on appearance and more on who we are.’
Gay Star News has contacted Manly for comment.

Cara Delevingne closes Burberry’s rainbow-themed fashion show.
Bisexual model Cara Delevingne closed Burberry’s West London fashion show wearing a giant rainbow cape.
The Show
The show, the last for Christopher Bailey who is retiring as president and chief creative officer for the brand, took place in a giant warehouse. The collection included a lot of streetwear-inspired pieces, a bit of nostalgia, and a socially progressive message—one of LGBTI acceptance.
Burberry collaborated with United Visual Artists on creating the atmosphere at the venue. The warehouse was decked out in long, swinging spotlights hanging from the ceiling and a giant prism of rainbow lasers the models walked through during the show’s finale.
The Collection
‘It’s quite a poignant collection just because it’s my last one, but it made me start thinking about the importance of time. I think we are living in such an interesting period, chaotic and upsetting and changing,’ Bailey said before the show. ‘I wanted to try and reflect that in some way in the collection.’
Bailey utilized Burberry’s archives and brought back prints the brand did in the 1960s, 70s, and early 80s. ‘It’s a real mishmash of things. A mélange of all of that. The sentiment of the show is about the future and how exciting and positive it is. I hope it is. I’m an optimist, my glass is half full,’ he said.
This season, Burberry also reissued popular pieces from the 80s and 90s that went on sale immediately. The fashion show also featured many pieces from the Rainbow Check Collection, which supports charities that help LGBTI youth.
The Looks
Check out images and videos from the show, including of Delevingne, as well as the Rainbow Check Collection below:
